2013: My 4th year to run a marathon for a cause or three...

It might be my 4th year to run a marathon for a cause but it's my first year to run this marathon and raise money for the National MS Society in honor of 3 separate individuals who all live with an autoimmune disease.

I've signed up for my 5th marathon with the Akron Marathon on September 28th.

I've signed up to raise money for Ohio Buckeye National MS Society for the 4th year in support of TEAM JULIA because I live in awe of my sister, Julia Neal.

I've decided to also run this marathon in honor of my dear friend, Lorene Adams and my incredible dad, Bob Capes!

Training:
To be perfectly honest - I haven't gotten in the training runs that I had hoped to at this point.  I had a hard time training last year - so I feel a little intimidated by the entire process.  I'm not too worried about it yet but I know I have a hard 2 1/2 months of training in front of me!  I have found a great running community in Mt. Juliet, TN - so I'm pretty excited that I've made new friends and have some people who will help me get the long runs completed!

TEAM JULIA:
It's an interesting thing to ask others to donate money to a cause that I care so deeply about.  My younger sister, Julia, lives with an autoimmune disease called Multiple Sclerosis.  And she doesn't know what every day will bring!  I spent a couple days last week in Ohio with my family and my sister said in passing that she hadn't been feeling great for a few days. I asked her what she meant and she said that she is feeling numbness in areas again.  I think I was hoping (she probably was too) that since she had her beautiful daughter, Grace, that her MS would just disappear forever.
But it hasn't. The MS is still around and will be until we find a cure!!!

So.  I will be training to run a full 26.2 miles and asking many of you to donate any amount of money towards the National MS Society!  You can click here to support TEAM JULIA for 2013!

ADAMS' AVENGERS:
I also was able to go to Pittsburg for a day with my mom, sister and niece to see friend Lorene at the Univ of Pittsburgh Medical Center!  Lorene had a double lung transplant about 3 weeks ago because she is living with another autoimmune disease, scleroderma.  It has been an emotional couple of months while she waited to the perfect lungs for her.  I can't even explain how proud I am to know Lorene and to be able to share in her story just a little bit.  She is such an incredible miracle!

Lorene has been one of TEAM JULIA's biggest supporters over the past few years when I've participated with RUN MS - because she has her own story and struggle with Scleroderma.

Two of my best friends and their families are signed up to Step Out to Cure Scleroderma on August 10th in York, PA as ADAMS' AVENGERS - You can support them here.

My dad:
This year I am intentionally running for my dad too.  Robert Carl Capes was diagnosed in 2006 with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia - also a disease that affects the autoimmune system.  He will be running the half marathon as part of TEAM JULIA again and honestly tells me every year to focus on raising money for MS.  So I am.  But he's part of my motivation as well.

See why I run a marathon to raise money and awareness?

I am surrounded by individuals who fill me with awe every time I think of them.  Each one of them inspire me to live each day more fully.  So how could I not run?

Thoughts and time.

I'm sitting at my parents breakfast nook.

No one else is home.

My dad set up the coffee maker to make me a perfect cup of strong coffee before he left this morning.

There is a note from mom about having "real Nuremberger bratwursts" for dinner. But she asks it as a question because she always wants to make sure we all approve. Need to remember to tell my sister.

I want to remember this moment. It almost feels tangible.

Little things.

Time to notice.

Time to pray for people that I love.

Time to offer thanks.

Will you help me fight Multiple Sclerosis???

It's that time again.  I am in the middle of training to run the Akron Roadrunner Marathon on September 24th!!!  And I am running this marathon to raise money and awareness for the National MS Society, the Ohio Buckeye Chapter.  I was so honored to be supported last year by so many of you - we raised over $3000 which at the time was the largest amount for RUN MS!!!

Multiple sclerosis interrupts the flow of information between the brain and the body and stops people from moving. With the help of people like you, the National MS Society addresses the challenges of each person whose life is affected by MS and helps them stay connected to the great big moving world. I am writing to ask you to join the movement by kindly donating to this cause that is so dear to my heart.

Your help means so much to me and all of those who live with MS. It is because of fundraisers like these that my sister, Julia (who I'm running in celebration of) and the millions of others with this disease are able to lead a somewhat normal life. Please join me to end MS. Help the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s ultimate mission of finding a cure possible, and, in the meantime, provide the crucial services to those living with multiple sclerosis.

Things are going to be a lot harder this year. The economy is at an all time low and many people are losing their jobs. These times are most likely negatively effecting you as well, which is why I understand if you cannot donate as much as you previously would have. Every little bit counts and adds towards our goal. I am asking you to visit my MS page at the following link:
http://main.nationalmssociety.org/site/TR/Run/OHAGeneralEvents?px=5065216&pg=personal&fr_id=15931

I honestly didn't know if I was going to be able to run a marathon again this year.  I really stopped enjoying running this past spring.  I've run multiple 1/2 marathons and marathons over the past 6 years and trained for them in the Florida heat and I really wanted a break.  But last week I decided that if my dad(who was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia in 2006) can run a marathon every year and if my sister(who is living with Multiple Sclerosis, can run, bike, and tri multiple races this year)then I better get my happy tail out there and run!!!!   And honestly, I am excited about it!!!

Here's to running 11 miles tomorrow in the Florida humidity and heat - and here's to the National MS Society finding a cure!

Please invite your friends to join! ANY DONATION, big or small, helps. Your support means more than you will ever know!

thoughts during Lent...

Mercy #3
Jesus wants to enter into a friendship with you.

Luke 19:1-10

Jesus actually invites himself into the house of a man that most people despise. Zacchaeus was the head tax collector in Jericho and he constantly took extra money from people for himself - nobody liked him. When Jesus said, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today.” Zacchaeus was very excited...most people didn't want to spend time with him.

According to Manning, in the Jewish Tradition, to say "I want to have dinner with you" means "I want to enter into a friendship with you". Even today, this is the custom with the Orthodox Jews...they won't invite you over for dinner unless they want to begin or deepen a friendship with you. Interesting when you consider that we are invited to the communion table with Christ.
(I did just spend some time looking up Jewish Traditions but didn't find any info about dinner and friendship - except that to invite someone to your table is a sign of welcome...fyi).

What I am getting most out of the 19 Mercies so far this week - is that Jesus wants to spend time with me. He wants me as I am and today. And He will celebrates when we are able to change our ways...like Zacchaeus giving half of his possessions to the poor and paying back 4x what he had taken from people. I love the last line of what Jesus says about Zacchaeus... “Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost.”

"...he too is a son of Abraham..." We are all part of the family - no matter what we do. No matter who we think we are and who others think we are.

The question I have for myself is what do I need to change - What have I taken from others. How do I give back. Do I already give back? I spend a lot of time helping others. But honestly that sometimes more about me than about the other people...I have learned that in the past couple of years. I am still working out the balance for that.

I haven't spent this much time studying different stories from the Bible just for myself in a long time...it's been good to listen to Jesus' words just for me. I spend a lot of time with him in prayer - especially when I run - but I don't know if when I am praying...if I am listening very well.

I have a place.

Hiking AND being lazy...

I got to go hiking this morning.
In the snow.
With my mom, sister and her husband.
Life is good.

It does seem hard to fit everything that we care about into such short periods of time. Hmmmm...

My day of thankful...

Thankful - Function: adjective
1: conscious of benefit received
2: expressive of thanks
3: well pleased : glad

Are we conscious of benefit received? Am I? Or am I just well pleased most of the time...hmmmm...I think I am conscious of benefits received. Over and over. But I do appreciate a nationwide holiday to make me think it through for a day.

Here's what I am most thankful for today...

I am thankful for a family that loves me even when I am selfish and unlovable - where I have learned to honor others before myself and that when you go through hard times, well then it's just "character building". That we laugh a lot and move funny and make weird noises - yep, we all do that. My family inspires me. To try things that scare me and to try to bring change into this world we live in. I could say something about each one of them but today, after spending time with my cousin Ana - I want to say that I am thankful that she is able to break down walls with her creativity and spirit! I love it!

I am thankful for my friends. Who really know me and I really know. The ones that I can talk about soul matters right away. Yeah. I like that.

I am thankful for those of you that run with me - especially this past year. And for my Ohio friends that run with me and my family in our "now" annual runs! Especially the Thanksgiving Run for the Homeless 4 miler. I can't think of a better way to start a day of thankful then running with family and friends to raise money for others.

I am thankful for a church family that allows me to explore in my faith journey with Christ. And gives me the freedom to travel and go to school. Really.

I am thankful for my brokenness.

I am thankful for my sister. I just talked to her on the phone...she's my best friend!

I am thankful for music and for words.

I am blessed.

Home...

I'm going HOME!!!
I am going to be loved on and spoiled by my wonderful family...and I can't wait. Ohio - here I come! I used to not like it that my parents moved to Ohio while I was in college because when I joined them during the holidays - I didn't know anyone else. But now I love that I get a few days just to spend with them. Funny how that changes huh.

Diana and new steps...

I am sitting in my living room with my right foot propped on a pillow watching the Princess Diana Memorial. I wasn't planning on watching the memorial - didn't even realize that it would be on the television. But it's interesting to remember where I was 10 years ago...I traveled with Amanda (Perry) Heibel to visit Kathleen Jones at Emory. We explored Atlanta and Emory and hung out in parks and enjoyed each others company. I remember watching some of the news about Diana's death which sparked conversation about how fragile life is...
Now 10 years later - I haven't talked to Kathleen since she got married two years ago, while Amanda and I have stayed in touch over the years but not as well as I want. We have so many minutes every day but there just don't seem to be enough minutes every day to really connect with the people that I want to. My roommate and I talked last night for awhile about how relationships are harder to maintain when you don't live in the same town...even with so many ways to communicate over the miles...for me, personally, one on one conversations or even just sitting in the same room together is the best.
It's amazing as well, to think about everywhere I have been, everything I have done and all the people I have learned from over just the past 10 years. I was living in Tallahassee at the time...and have since lived in Sneads(FL), Pensacola, Atlanta, Nashville and Orange Beach. I hiked 2,172 miles in 14 states with my sister and 3 other friends. Funny, because 10 years ago, my sister and I didn't get along as well as we could have and now she is my best friend! I couldn't imagine life without her laughter and words of wisdom and determination...I am more thankful for those 6 months on the Appalachian Trail with her that I can express.
The best part is - that I LOVE my life - I am blessed and broken and so thankful for all of you and my experiences. It's good. Yep.
I actually was just going to share the good news - that I just rode a stationary bike at the gym for 40 minutes and have lifted weights 3 times this week...it has been SO good to get out and move! My foot is swollen right now but it feels great! I had the stitches removed on Tuesday and have been allowed to weight bare on my foot as long as it's comfortable for me. Yea! It is so much easier to go upstairs now! I am so slow and I only put weight on the outside of my foot...but I can walk! And it's only been 3 weeks since my surgery! Hmmmm...one day at a time.

3rd half marathon in 3 months...tomorrow morning.

I just got back from a Leadnow conference in Orlando, FL. I basically went because Donald Miller was speaking. I can't believe how busy I have become over the past month - I expect this business in youth ministry for the summer but January/February? And I don't really see an end in sight till April...I went to Orlando with 3 other people - all of which I know pretty well - so I didn't feel like I had to be "on" all the time. It was good time to just listen to them and to process and just be quiet.

Don Miller shared basically what his new years resolution was - which is to have his life tell a better story: http://donmillerfans.net/2006/12/

That my story has a protagonist(me) and I have dreams and must face my fears to accomplish my dreams...

Everyday we have a choice to truly live or to allow our fears to stop us from living- from contributing to the story that God is writing in our lives.

One of my dreams right now is to walk alongside teenagers as they figure out where they fit in the body of Christ. Which I am actually doing. But it could be better. I have allowed the fact that I get so busy to get in the way of really loving them well. But busy means that I am doing things, right? Right... I also decide that if I don't like one of them, then God must not either. Right...again. So here's to seeing them through His eyes and allowing them the grace to be loved right where they are.

3 half marathons so far. Why? Cause I only live once. Going for 7 more for 2007. This is something that I can share with my dad and sister - even if we aren't running together we are out there struggling and growing through our running over time - it makes my heart hurt in a good way.

Recharge...from myspace

Give me raisins or even some floss. I am trying to fix my blog from last week - but I am not sure that this will work. I tried to write it two times last week and then posted with all the weird dots in between. Maybe, I just need to give up on it...but not yet cause I wrote about life and emotions and blessings and examples...so let's see...

I am emotional tonight - I have had many experiences this past week - and most of them have been amazing.

Depressed? Over peopled or experiences? Need some alone time? 30 hours with high school girls at Chrysalis and got to worship with song, me - singing - yep, it was good. The praising God part that is. Time with my 6th graders yesterday, they will be in the youth group officially in a month! Before that ran a 5k at my church - our annual run for Missions. Time with the family for a whole week...prayer together on the beach.

Savior. Example. He never forced himself on anyone. Just was available for anyone. And He went to a garden to pray. Maybe I need to find my garden.

coleslaw...from myspace

I only like the kind of coleslaw that has NO mayonaise in it. It has a vinegar base and the one that I make - has ramen noodles and toasted almonds and sesame seeds...YUM!

I say all of that just cause...I had a friend ask me for that recipe this weekend and I keep forgetting to email it to her - but I wrote "coleslaw" on my hand with a permanent marker. You would think I could remember. But I haven't yet.

When you talk to people about certain things they believe or don't believe it is amazing to me that so much of our beliefs come from other's peoples influence. So instead of saying - I believe or even I think I believe "this" - they say, "well, so and so says this and so maybe that is the way things should be". But if you go to so and so - they were probably influenced by someone as well. So if we can peel away all the people-is there ever someone with an original thought? And does that really matter?

I don't know if an original thought really matters, but it does matter that we at least think our beliefs, opinions, fears, truths, faith, hopes, and especially our hates through.

And I just started to fall asleep - which is pretty funny - so I am going to bed...but before I leave myspace for another week. Just want to share that my family is here for the week - mom, dad, and Julia(my sis) drove down from Ohio. And wow, what a blessing it is to be with people that just love me. I don't have to prove a darn thing to any of them. And it was pretty cool, Julia came to youth group with me tonight and sat in my hs girls community group. Moments that I relish. Mmmmm...but I like coleslaw better.
