Texting and cars...

I went and saw the movie Jumper last night with 3 of my friends. A few of us are trying to catch a movie on Monday nights before 6:00 p.m. so we can get in before the price goes up. It's been fun to rush and meet each other...ANYWAYS.
Before I left the theater I stopped and parked again to text one of my students and get a number for a sushi place, cause I was craving sushi...smoked salmon roll and a tuna roll...yum. I am trying to be more intentional to not text and drive cause as good as I think I am - I am really not that good. So my student found the number, texted it to me and I dialed and proceeded to leave the theater. I turned onto a 3 lane road and went straight over to the left lane because there weren't any cars around at that point and I figured I would be ready for my future left hand turn...about 5 seconds later as I am placing my order for sushi - I notice a car going in the opposite direction start to slow down and proceed to do a U-turn and it didn't look like the car was going to stop and wait for me to pass. Now all of this happened s-l-o-w m-o-t-i-o-n but I quit talking to the woman on the phone and proceed to speed up - not slow down. I don't know if it is because I just watched a high paced movie and felt like I was a character in the movie but I sped up and swerved a bit to the right and managed to avoid being creamed on the left hand side of my car. The lady on the phone said "Sushi will be ready in 15 minutes" and I said thanks and dropped the phone. Double checked the fact that there were NO other cars around and watched the car behind me to make sure it didn't charge me again. My pulse was RACING and I kept thinking...I just sped up! If I had slowed down...I would have been hit.
At the next stop light I made sure my lights were on because maybe the car didn't see me but they were on and then I just shook my head in amazement at the entire 15 second process where life could have been so different.
They were probably texting someone...
It's a good thing I was only on the phone. Ha.
